Houston guide

Free Museum Days in Houston (2026 Guide).

Houston has one of the largest free museum scenes in the United States. Between the Museum District's weekly free days and a handful of permanently free institutions, you can fill an entire visit with world-class art, science, and history without paying a cent. Here's the up-to-date schedule, organized so you can plan a day — or a whole week — from our Midtown townhome.

How to plan a free museum day from Midtown

Our home sits in Midtown, about a mile north of the Museum District. The METRORail Red Line stops a block away and runs straight to the Museum District / Hermann Park station — about a 6-minute ride. A typical free Thursday looks like this:

  1. Coffee in Midtown, then hop the Red Line south at 10:30am.
  2. Spend the morning at the MFAH (free all day) — give the Beck Building at least 90 minutes.
  3. Walk five minutes to CAMH (always free) for a quick contemporary show.
  4. Lunch in the Museum District, then HMNS after 2pm when the permanent halls become free.
  5. Cap the night at Children's Museum Houston (free 5–8pm) if you have kids, or stroll the Menil Campus in Montrose if you don't.

A few practical notes

  • Free days only cover general admission. Blockbuster ticketed exhibitions (Van Gogh, King Tut–style touring shows) usually still cost extra, even on Thursdays.
  • The Houston Zoo runs a small number of free admission days each year — typically weekdays in the fall. Tickets are released in advance on the zoo's website.
  • On school holidays the Children's Museum Free Night fills up fast — arrive close to 5pm.
  • Always double-check hours on the museum's official site before you go; this guide is updated regularly but holiday closures vary.

Stay in Midtown — minutes from every museum on this list.
